The dual boot issue is simple enough but more of that later. First if Dell are sending you an upgrade version of XP that means you can only upgrade over another Windows operating system. In your case Windows ME. Dual boots are usually done using a clean install and the full version of Windows XP, not an upgrade.

the rest of what I say is based on RH 7.2 and 7.3, and hope I am not misleading you. At least it is what I would expect, and hope it may be helpful. If you ever reinstall your XP on C:\ it will wipe out GRUB and you will have to boot RH from another disk and reinstall GRUB (easy).

Remember now, that Win9X, Me or Win95 can not see WinXP or WinNT NTFS partitions. I took me a while to figure out the dual booting this way but got it working great. Well, I decided I wanted Win98SE on my D drive so I removed Win95 manually and installed Win98SE to When I finished the 98 install and rebooted, I expected the boot partition and MBS to be wiped of Win2k but this did NOT happen.

Does Partition Size Matter? Another Dual Boot Question
In fact, the partition used to boot NT should be FAT 16 AND be located within the first 2GB of the first HB, which was not the case. Here's my setup: c: Win98 (2 gig) & d: NT4 (2 gig) When I boot into nt I get a black screen which lasts about 15 sec. then the blue screen. NT finally boots.

A better solution would be to boot to Win2000 first, then remove delete everything pertaining to Win98 from drive c. Do not format drive c. That way you'll leave the Win2000 boot sector intact. Then install WinXP from the CD-ROM and you should wind up with a dual boot option. I have W2000 on d: and W98 on c:.

Philosophies differ in whether the applications should be installed into separate partitions to correspond to each OS or not. Our choice is to install applications into the respective application partitions for each OS since removal via add/remove from one OS may affect the use of the application on the other OS.
